Personal Disaster Preparedness
Internet resources for personal emergency preparedness for medical and non medical volunteers.
Ready.gov is a website sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security and is a great resource for preparing a personal disaster preparedness kit. It includes an instructional video and recommendation lists for items to place in your emergency kit.
The American Red Cross has also made a comprehensive list of items to include in your personal disaster preparedness kit. The second link offers advice about recovering from a disaster. It gives a list of agencies to contact for document replacement and gives specific information regarding specific disasters, i.e. floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, and wildfires.
Disasters are emotional and traumatic times for everyone involved, including volunteers. Prepare yourself emotionally for what you may experience. The following websites offer some simple tips on stress reduction and staying focused during an emergency.
